Java 7 update 51 is not recommended at this time

Blackboard recommends that faculty and students do NOT update their Java to the newest version (7u51) that was released on January 14. Installing this new release of Java impacts the use of the Virtual Classroom and chat functions and prevents faculty and students from uploading multiple files (though single file uploads are still available.)

    1. Hi Professor Britton -
I’d recommend that (if it’s a college computer) you contact ITS desktop computing for assistance. I don’t believe, however, that any of the college computers were updated, as we were working with ITS and the Learning Commons to prevent just this sort of thing from happening. If this is on your personal computer, I’d recommend contacting whatever help assistance you use for yourself to walk you through it. I’m sorry that we can’t provide support to un-install software on personal computers – this is actually exactly the kind of thing we were attempting to save you the trouble of by posting the warnings.
      Thanks! – Sasha

  2. Are we now allowed to download the new Java update?

    1. Gloria,

Blackboard has not yet released a patch to address the impact to Collaboration or multiple file uploads, so you should wait if you can. (A number of other vendors also recommend waiting to update, as the new Java version introduces a lot of changes that many vendors are trying to address.) We will make another announcement when Blackboard works appropriately with Java 7 update 51.

      Thanks,
      Genevieve
