Quality Matters

Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) Workshop At Cleveland State

Ohio QM Consortium LogoThis workshop sponsored by the Center for eLearning at Cleveland State and explores the Quality Matters program and prepares you to be part of an initiative that positively impacts the design of online/blended courses and ultimately, learning and success for the learner. QM is designed to improve the quality of online/blended courses by establishing a peer-reviewed quality assurance review process. You will become familiar with QM standards and participate in a practice peer course review of an online course using the review tools.

Participants in this hands-on workshop can be:

  • Online/blended instructors
  • Faculty members
  • Instructional designers

After successfully completing this workshop, you will be eligible to move into the Online Peer Reviewer Certification and gain ideas to improve your own courses using QM Standards.

Upon completion of the QM training, you will be able to:

  • Identify the underlying principles of QM
  • Identify the critical elements of the QM quality assurance program, including QM Rubric, materials, processes, and administrative components
  • Apply the QM Rubric to review online courses
  • Make decisions on whether the SPCH1113 course meets selected QM Rubric standards
  • Apply the concept of alignment
  • Write helpful recommendations for course improvement by citing annotations from the QM Rubric and evidence from the course

Seats Available:  15 for external participants.

Who should attend? Faculty interested in becoming a Peer Reviewer or learning more about QM.

Cost: FREE for faculty members teaching at an institution that is a member of the Ohio QM Consortium, such as Tri-C. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Registration is required!

Free Quality Matters APPQMR workshop at the University of Akron

The UniversiQuality Matters Logoty of Akron is offering a free “Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR)” workshop on April 22, 2016 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. This workshop will explore the Quality Matters project and processes and will prepare you to be part of an initiative that positively impacts the design of online/blended courses and ultimately, student learning and success. Cost: FREE for participants from an institution that is a member of the Ohio QM Consortium. Cleveland State University will provide coffee and lunch. Paid parking will be available in the visitor lot near the building.

You must come to the workshop with a QM Rubrics Workbook. Consult with your school’s Institutional Representative to obtain a workbook for the workshop. You can also order this from Quality Matters for $15 plus shipping and handling. Please order your workbook quickly to assure that you have it in time for the APPQMR training. If you have trouble obtaining a workbook prior to training please let us know.  We have a few extra.

“Findability” is a component of “usability,” whereby students can find essential course components.  Results included that courses with low findability reported lower levels of self-efficacy and motivation.

New Upcoming APPQMR Opportunities

There are several new QM training opportunities available.  There are 4 upcoming “Applying the Quality Matters Rubric” workshops within the Ohio Consortium.  They are:

  • Kent State University, May 8
  • An online version that runs May 12 – May 26
  • University of Findlay, May 12
  • The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences, May 20

To register for any of these opportunities, please go to https://www.qualitymatters.org/ and login to your “MyQM” account.  If you do not have a MyQM account, you can create one by  clicking on “New Acct.”

1).  Once you have created your account, in order to register click on “Higher Education.”

2).  Then, click on (1) Workshop Register.  This will expand the Workshop menu.  Then select (2) Dedicated Training.  Dedicated Training will narrow your results to trainings available through the Ohio QM Consortium.

Get Involved with QM – APPQMR Training and Course Submission

You are invited to participate in Quality Matters at Tri-C. There are two different opportunities:

  1. Submit your course for QM certification. We still have a few slots left for certification for this year. Contact Sasha at Sasha.Thackaberry@tri-c.edu.
  2. Join us for a FREE, day-long training – Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR).

Both opportunities offer a great way to get involved in Quality Matters. They either showcase your existing course or allow you to learn new skills to further develop
your online and blended courses.

The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric is Friday, March 27, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Metro Campus in TLC 153. This professional development opportunity is eligible for two (2) service credits, or one (1)  workshop credit for the adjunct stipend. Lunch is provided. Register here.

Quality Matters (QM) is a leader in quality assurance for online education and has received national recognition for its peer-based approach to continuous improvement in online education and student learning. The program features:

  • Faculty-centered, continuous improvement models for assuring the quality of online courses through peer review.

  • Rubrics for applying quality standards to course design.

To become officially QM Recognized a course: 1) Completed review by a 3-person trained team (1 Master Reviewer, 1 Subject Matter expert and at least one external reviewer), 2) Meet All of the 3-Point essential standards, and 3) Earn a total overall score of 81 out of 95 points.
