Math Equation Editor Issues

The Blackboard Math Equation Editor is not functioning properly in Internet Explorer. Faculty and students who want to use the Math Equation Editor can use an alternate browser, such as Firefox or Chrome.

Mixed Content Browser Warnings

In Blackboard, internet browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer may display messages asking the user to allow or block unsafe or mixed content. The default option is to Block and some users may automatically click this when the popup box appears. If Blackboard is not loading content in the browser, it may be blocking mixed content.

Enabling mixed content in Internet Explorer:

  1. Click on Tools at the top of the browser menu bar.
  2. Select Internet Options.
  3. Select the Security tab at the top.
  4. Click the Custom Level… button.
  5. Scroll about halfway down to the Miscellaneous heading (denoted by a “blank page” icon).
  6. Under this heading is the option Display Mixed Content; set this to Enable.
  7. Click OK, then Yes when prompted to confirm the change, then OK to close the Options window.
  8. Close and restart the browser.

Enabling mixed content in Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Click the alert shield icon in the address bar.
  2. In the icon dialog box, click the menu button.
  3. Select Disable Protection on This Page.

  1. Click the alert shield icon in the address bar.
  2. In the icon dialog box, click Load anyway.

Blackboard has implemented a security feature that prevent external URLs from opening in the same window. Links that are NOT set to open in a new window will display the following message (below). The recommendation is to allow all links to Open in a New Window.


Copy and Paste not functioning in Firefox

Faculty and students using Firefox are unable to Copy and Paste within text boxes in the browser. This is a known issue with versions Firefox 22.0 and 23.0, and should be addressed in a future update of the browser.

In the meantime, faculty and students can work around the issue in one of two ways:

  1. For Firefox 22.0 or 23.0 users – use an alternate browser (such as Internet Explorer or Chrome)
  2. For Firefox 23.0 users – Copy the text from Firefox and paste it into a text editor (such as Notepad or Microsoft Word), then copy from the text editor and paste it back into Firefox.

Resolved Issues

Blackboard Tests, potential Save Button Issue

The Save Answer box in a test may cover test question text on long test questions. Student experiencing this issue can minimize the course menu in Blackboard and adjust display options to gain more screen space. Display adjustments include decreasing text size, (zooming out), and maximizing the window size. Faculty can address this issue by adding breaks (

) as the first line of each question to add buffer space between the Save Answer box and the text. Blackboard is expected to address this issue with a future update.

IE Display Issues

IE compatibility view causes display anomalies in Blackboard. Faculty using IE to access Blackboard should turn compatibility view off while using Blackboard.

Crocodoc Issue in Firefox

There is a known issue in Firefox with Crocodoc – the tool that provides inline grading in Blackboard. If an instructor leaves a comment with the inline grading tool, and the comment box is still active (cursor blinking) when the Submit button is pressed, the comment disappears. This is currently only happening in Firefox. The workaround is to make sure to click anywhere inside the Crocodoc frame, but outside any comment boxes. When using Firefox, make sure your cursor is not blinking in any of the Crocodoc comment boxes before clicking the Submit button. We will be testing and implementing a building block update to address this issue.


PDFs in Adobe Connect Meetings – Resolved

Please use the “Share Application” option to share PDFs in Adobe Connect Meetings.  The “Share Document” option is currently not recognizing PDFs for display. eLi and ITS are aware of the issue and working on a solution.

Blackboard Tests Currently Unavailable – Resolved

The ability to open a Blackboard test is temporarily unavailable.  ITS and eLI are working on the issue. We will update the blog with a resolution as soon as it is available.

Internet Explorer 11 Issues in Blackboard – Resolved

Faculty and students are advised not to use Internet Explorer 11 to access Blackboard at this time.  Microsoft released an update to IE11 on February 11 that can cause the web browser either to crash or become unresponsive when accessing Blackboard course sites. The Office of eLearning & Innovation is working with ITS and Blackboard to address the issue.  Additional updates will be posted to the blog as soon as they are available. In the meantime, anybody who uses Internet Explorer 11 is encouraged to use an alternate browser such as Firefox or Chrome.

Intermittent issue loading SoftChalk Create

Tri-C Private Cloud users: we have noticed an occasional issue in launching SoftChalk Create from the cloud and have created a ticket with SoftChalk. If you experience difficulty starting the SoftChalk Create application from our private cloud please call 216 987-4257 for assistance.

Crocodoc Outage, Resolved

According to Blackboard, Crocodoc – the tool that provides the inline grading view – was unavailable to all Blackboard schools from approximately 1:15 – 3:45pm today. Service has been restored, and the inline grading view for assignments should again be accessible to faculty and students.

Safe Assign not working in Internet Explorer – Resolved

Please use Chrome or Firefox when working with Safe Assign.  Currently, Save Assign is not working with Internet Explorer, (IE) due to an IE settings conflict. eLi is aware of the issue and we are working with ITS to resolve the issue.
